A deuterated, racemic form of biotin, rac Biotin-d4 is a stable-isotope-labelled standard in which four hydrogen atoms are replaced by deuterium, giving a defined mass difference from the natural vitamin. Because biotin is added to foods, supplements and infant formula and is also measured in clinical samples, the labelled compound is chiefly used as an internal standard for quantitative assays. Its applications include LC-MS/MS method development and validation, isotope dilution calibration, assessment of extraction recovery from complex matrices and verification of analyte stability during sample handling. The material is a white to off-white solid with the formula C10H12D4N2O3S and a molecular weight of 248.34. It should be kept at -20 °C ± 5 °C and shipped on ice packs, and pack sizes of 1 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg and 100 mg are available.
