Pelargonidin chloride is an anthocyanidin, the aglycone of the orange-red anthocyanin pigments found in strawberries, radishes and many ornamental plants. It is offered as the chloride salt, with the formula C15H11O5 Cl and molecular weights of 271.24 for the cation and 35.45 for chloride, and the material is a red powder. Natural-product and food laboratories use such an anthocyanidin standard to identify pigment peaks in HPLC-DAD or LC-MS profiles, to quantify anthocyanin content in extracts and beverages and to validate extraction and hydrolysis procedures in which the aglycone is released from its glycosides.
