Surfactin is a cyclic lipopeptide biosurfactant produced by Bacillus species, built from a heptapeptide ring closed by a beta-hydroxy fatty acid. Its molecular weight of 1036.34 and formula C53H93N7O13 reflect this amphiphilic architecture, which lowers surface tension and gives the molecule detergent-like behaviour. Because surfactin is encountered in fermentation-derived products, food-contact applications and veterinary residue studies, laboratories keep a defined reference material on hand for method development and validation, for identity confirmation by chromatographic and mass spectrometric comparison, and for quantitative calibration when measuring fermentation yields or residues. Supplied as a white to off-white solid, it should be stored at -20 °C (±5 °C) and is shipped with ice packs. The pack sizes offered are 1 mg and 5 mg.
