A deuterium-labelled analogue of the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone, Dexamethasone-d5 carries five deuterium atoms in place of hydrogen and is widely used as an internal standard in quantitative residue analysis. Because the labelled compound behaves almost identically to the analyte during extraction and chromatography while remaining distinguishable by mass, it corrects for losses and ion suppression across sample preparation and detection.
