Campestanol is the saturated stanol analogue of campesterol, formed by hydrogenation of the side-chain double bond, and it belongs to the group of plant sterols and stanols that are monitored in edible oils, fats and food commodities. Its presence matters in residue and authenticity testing, where the relationship between sterols and stanols is used to detect adulteration or to characterise a raw material, so a defined single-component standard supports dependable interpretation. Laboratories apply it in GC and LC method development, in identification of sterol peaks by retention time and mass spectrum, and in quantitative calibration of phytosterol assays.
