Nitrofuran antibiotics are monitored through their tissue-bound metabolites, and 1-Amino Hydantoin-13C3 is the labelled form of the metabolite derived from nitrofurantoin. Three carbon-13 atoms are incorporated into the hydantoin ring, so the standard can be distinguished from the natural analyte by mass while following it through acid hydrolysis and derivatisation.
