Deoxynivalenol, also known as vomitoxin, is a trichothecene mycotoxin associated with Fusarium head blight in wheat, barley, maize and other cereals. The compound has the formula C15H20O6 and a molecular weight of 296.32, and it is presented as a white to beige solid. Mycotoxin testing laboratories depend on certified reference material of this type to calibrate quantitative LC-MS/MS or GC-MS determinations, to establish recovery in cereal and feed matrices and to confirm peak identity in survey and monitoring work. As a toxic natural product it is normally handled in restricted volumes under appropriate containment. Storage at -20 C +/- 5 C is indicated and shipments are dispatched with ice packs.
