13-cis-Retinol is a geometric isomer of retinol, the parent alcohol of vitamin A, differing only in the configuration of one double bond in the polyene side chain. Because such isomers can interconvert and are difficult to resolve, the isolated cis isomer is valuable for building methods that distinguish individual vitamin A isomers rather than reporting a single summed value. Laboratories use it for LC or LC-MS method development and validation, calibration and peak identification, isomerisation and stability studies, and confirmation of composition in standards, foods and pharmaceutical preparations. It is described as a pale yellow to yellow oil to low-melting solid with the formula C20H30O and a molecular weight of 286.45.
